Your monthly update from the EAU

This marks the last edition of EAU News in 2015 and it’s been my pleasure to keep you informed. It’s been another full year for the EAU, with over a dozen scientific meetings organised, an increase to 15,000 members, the launch of a new scientific journal, and our fond farewell to Per-Anders Abrahamsson who stepped down as EAU Secretary General at the Annual Congress in Madrid.

Next year is set to be another great year for urology: we have a record number of abstract submissions for EAU16; several new meetings will be taking place, and you can look forward to several new e-courses.

Wishing you a happy 2016 filled with health, prosperity and success!

 With kind regards,
 Chris Chapple
 EAU Secretary General

Scientific Opinion on safety of surgical meshes

The Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) of the European Commission, in which the EAU has a strategic advisory role, has published its Final Opinion on the safety of surgical meshes used in urogynaecological surgery. A key conclusion is that in assessing the risk associated with mesh application, it is important to consider the overall surface area of material used, the product design and the properties of the material used. Review the main recommendations here.
