Support for Ukraine

Find out what you as an NTU student can do to help the situation in Ukraine.

As the situation in Ukraine continues, we recognise that you may wish to help. Working with our local and international community partners, there are several ways in which NTU students can get involved and lend their support.

These pages will be updated regularly as opportunities and request for support develop.

Volunteer

If you plan to volunteer for any of the below opportunities, fill out our volunteering and community engagement form to register as an NTU volunteer.

HOST Nottingham

Host has opportunities to get involved in vital work providing temporary accommodation, practical support, clothing, and advocacy for any asylum seekers and refugees seeking sanctuary in Nottingham. Host stands in solidarity with those fleeing the war in Ukraine, but as a small charity supporting hundreds of refugees from North Africa and Middle East, they are unable to accommodate requests to support a specific country. However, demand for services will inevitably increase and volunteers are needed as detailed below:

  • Become a Host and offer a person a safe place to stay and companionship whilst they process their asylum claim (please see information further down the page about the Homes for Ukraine scheme if you are looking to offer accommodation specifically for a Ukrainian refugee)
  • Volunteer for the Side by Side project and help people attend appointments, practice their English, and navigate their new surroundings

Nottingham & Notts Refugee Forum (NNRF)

NNRF supports people seeking sanctuary in Nottingham to rebuild their lives and integrate into society by offering practical advice, information, support, and friendship. They also campaign on issues affecting refugees. There are many ways to volunteer with NNRF, from helping with anti-destitution projects to interpreting. Find out more on the NNRF website. Please note NNRF welcomes refugees from any country, so its work is not specific to, but includes Ukraine.

Refugee Roots

Refugee Roots is a Christian charity that helps asylum seekers and refugees build relationships and navigate the complexities of building a new life in the UK through numerous services. Various volunteering opportunities include supporting activities, helping people navigate the city, and fundraising. To find out more please visit the Refugee Roots website.

Ukrainian Cultural Centre

AUGB Nottingham is providing continued support to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine through donations and supporting refugees when they arrive in Nottingham by setting up an information hub at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre.  Moving forward, volunteers will be needed to help meet and greet Ukrainian refugees, support welcome sessions, and disseminate information and advice needed by new refugees to the UK.

Little John’s House

Little John’s House – an international charity partner of NTU for the last 11 years - is an independent charity operating for almost 30 years in Romania, working with some amazing children and young people with additional needs. They have recently opened a new day centre in Sibiu city and have been able to utilise some of that space and resources to host Ukrainian women and children during short term transit stays through Romania. It will be a chance for them to rest, regroup, gather whatever they need, contact loved ones and get any additional help they need. Donations can be made via an Amazon.de wish list by following the actions detailed below:

  • Open the link and browse through, choose which gift(s) to purchase and add to your basket. Proceed to checkout.
  • The wish list has been set-up for all gifts to go directly to the Team at Little John’s House in Romania, so please ensure you click Calin Blaga as the delivery address. This should appear automatically. If you have any problems, please email Hannah Charlton, Volunteering Coordinator.
  • At payment stage you will get the normal receipt confirming your purchase.
  • Please email Hannah Charlton to inform of any donations you have made.

HOST Nottingham

Help at the Clothes Bank (within Refugee Forum on Hungerhill Road, NG3 4NB) to provide those seeking refuge in Nottingham with much needed clothing, toiletries, shoes, and bags (please note, Host is currently only seeking good quality, appropriate clothing and trainers, rucksacks, suitcases and new underwear due to limited storage). Please email Carol Wilby, Community Engagement and Volunteering Coordinator, if you would like to donate.
